Daruma

Here's a study from life that I did a while ago. The little guy made such pretty reflected light!

This was actually painted in Lab-mode, which I've been experimenting with lately. Most of the time the differences to RGB are barely noticeable, but there is probably a lot more to discover. One thing that stood out to me was that in Lab the colors seem to behave like light, whereas in RGB they are more like paint - the best example for that is how red and green blend.
I might try switching back and forth in one painting and see how that goes!

  1. I love this, you have captured the metallic paint for the little guys eyebrows so well, but for me, what makes this piece great and brings a smile to my face... the ring binder, how many sketchbook rings have we all bent, torn pages from and seen over the years? It brought back memories for me, so thanks.

  2. This looks a lot like a photograph, the shape is very well illustrated and the metalic gold lookes incredibly well done.

I find different colour settings to be interesting, but RGB should act most like light since they are the primary light colours, though the programs calculations may make it so the colours blend more like pigment.

Lab mode is definetly interesting as it uses CMYK (cyenne, magenta and yellow) which are the primary pigment colours and RGB(Red Green Blue) so that the limitations of each range are elliminated. It allows for the most intense of all the colour ranges. It might not be so great for printing, but it would make web graphics look awesome.
